Dec. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- The UK’s leading discount and voucher code website conducted a study of 1,198 people across the UK to discover the attitudes of Britons towards Christmas and all that the festive season brings.

The poll, by www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, found that almost 1 in 10, 9%, ‘don’t like’ Christmas, whilst a further 7% admitted to being a Christmas ‘Scrooge;’ meaning that they try to avoid the festivities that Christmas brings, at all costs.
According to the results, women are full of more festive cheer than men, with 62% of those who admitted to being a Christmas Grinch being male.

Of those polled, 41% claimed to feel ‘pressured’ during the Christmas period, 26% of which felt forced into spending money that they didn't have. A further 14% felt pressured into ‘cooking and preparing’ traditional festive food.

Furthermore, 1 in 3 of the respondents, 34%, cited that Christmas was ‘too expensive’ with an additional 11% claiming to ‘begrudge’ spending money on Christmas gifts, food and decorations.

More than 1 in 5, 22%, of those asked claimed to ‘dread’ the weather that often accompanies the festive season, with 6% saying that they would prefer Christmas to fall in the summer months.

When asked to specify their favourite aspect of Christmas, 44% agreed that spending time with family and friends was a highlight; 31% valued the time off work and 18% cited that receiving gifts was their Christmas highlight.
In contrast, the majority of those asked, 51%, claimed to ‘love’ the Christmas period and 18% ‘enjoy’ the time of year. The remaining respondents felt ‘impartial’ towards the festive time of year.

Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, commented on the findings:
“I can completely empathise with those who find Christmas a struggle due to the financial implications. However, Christmas isn’t just about spending money and giving gifts. As well as the religious side of the holiday, it is also a great opportunity to spend time with family, friends and all those you care about, which is something you often don't have time to do at other times of the year.”

He continued,

“It was good to read that the majority of Britons enjoy Christmas; it is reassuring to know that we aren’t a nation of Scrooges, aside from the 7%. If you are looking to save money on gifts this Christmas, MyVoucherCodes.co.uk has thousands of discounts available, all of which will save consumers some money.”
