This year in the United States over three million skin cancers will be diagnosed.  Since golfers spend a significant amount of time in the sun not only playing golf but also practicing, they may be at a higher risk than the general population for developing skin cancer.  Approximately 12,000 people will die from skin cancer, primarily from melanoma.

Wearing a wide brim hat that helps cover your ears and neck and using a good sunscreen with a SPF of 30 should be the foundation of a sun protection strategy.  During the non summer months, many people are more comfortable wearing a long sleeve shirt and long pants. But that is no guarantee that those garments protect against UV rays.  To be sure that those clothes will protect you from UV rays, they should have a Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) label.  The UPF rating is a system of measuring a fabric’s UV blocking capability, much like SPF is for sunscreen.   You can add a product like SunSleeves (Iconic Sport) to a short sleeve polo to give your arms needed sun protection.
