Dec. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- The Senior Management at Newcastle United have made the decision to sack Chris Hughton from his position as manager and have put reserve team boss Peter Beardsley in charge of first team affairs. Alan Pardew, Martin Jol, Martin O’Neill and Alan Churbishley are currently the bookies favourites to replace Hughton, however the decision is still in the hands of the Chairman Mike Ashley. Criticism has come from players, the football industry and fans over the decision.

The local community and loyal fanbase are shocked by the decision; and have made no secret of their dislike for Chairman Mike Ashley in the past. Former Magpies defender and now Head Football Coach at East Durham College, Steve Howey, when asked whether he thinks Ashley is worried about the repercussions of the sacking replied: “From the things he’s done in the past [it appears] he hasn’t got the club’s or the fan’s interest at heart.” Steve Howey was interviewed by the BBC’s Katie Gornall to discuss his thoughts on the dismissal, which saw senior players such as Kevin Nolan, Jonas Gutierrez and Sol Campbell express their support for Hughton. Hughton was appointed as Manager in October 2009 after first joining the club in 2008 as coach to then Manager Kevin Keegan.
Hughton has released a press statement saying he was “immensely proud” of his achievements and that he wishes the club “all the very best for the future.” The termination of Hughton’s contract is now with the LMA, who are very disappointed about the dismissal considering the success the club had under Hughton’s wing.

The main criticism has come because of the seemingly unnecessary sacking of a successful and well-liked Manager. Hughton lead to club to promotion from the Championship as Champions and to 11th in the Premier League this season. The reason cited for the sacking was that they wanted someone with more managerial experience. In his interview Steve Howey made the point that Hughton has only just got comfortable and in a good position as Manager: “They want someone with experience but won’t give Hughton the chance to get it.”
