Having ringing, whooshing, throbbing or roaring going on inside your head (also known as tinnitus) can be a real irritant. I have tinnitus, and in recent years, the quiet and intermittent ringing noise in my left ear had progressed to a constant and loud tinnitus in both ears. And I have been truly appalled at the impact this has had on my day-to-day life. I have talked with many other tinnitus sufferers, and compared notes. We discovered similar impacts in our lives, but it doesn't have to be that way.

At work, I often had difficulty hearing conversations in large meetings (and I go to a lot of meetings). I was always asking people to speak up, or to keep side conversations down. I had to sit right in front of a main presenter, and far from any fans that were in the room. At home, even television-watching became an ordeal. I either was constantly asking what had been said, or cranking up the volume to levels that were too loud for my family. I wanted to have music on all the time, as the sounds masked my tinnitus a bit, so it wasn't so disruptive. But not everyone in my family appreciated the constant music, so I switched to my mp3 player, and then I couldn't hear them at all!

My sleep was disrupted as well, and you know how a constant lack of sleep can impact your life! I was tired, cranky and frustrated a lot of the time. The coffee I drank to stay awake made my loud tinnitus even louder. It was a no-win situation, for me and for others in my life.

If this sounds like your experience, you certainly aren't alone. And you don't have to give in to this loud tinnitus, the constant ringing in your ears, as a part of your life you can't control. There are things you can do to reduce or even eliminate the loud tinnitus that can interfere with your life.
