Dec. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- five ACCESSORIES,  a local, socially conscious company, has selected the Center for Disability and Elder Law (CDEL) as one of the beneficiaries of its “Off the Street” program.  FIVE Accessories works with StreetWise Magazine and its vendors who get paid to create handmade frames using recycled urban refuse such as sports ticket stubs and transit cards collected from the streets of Chicago. A portion of the proceeds for each frame sold will go to support CDEL.

CDEL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the legal rights of low-income persons with disabilities and senior citizens in Cook County and actively promotes pro bono work among the legal community.

“Because of our business model, we are able to provide assistance to thousands of people each year with extremely low operating costs,” says Michael T. Roth, Esq., executive director of CDEL. “Approximately ninety percent of our budget goes directly to services for the elderly and disabled populations we serve.  The revenue generated from FIVE Accessories’ “Off the Streets” program will allow us to help many more people via prevention and direct legal assistance pertaining to foreclosure, landlord/tenant and other issues.

“Off The Street” helps people stay off the street; helps to clean up city litter and instills pride in the participants who are making useful and sustainable goods,” says Christine Hutchison, founder of five ACCESSORIES.    “Much of CDEL’s efforts are directed at helping people who are struggling to hang onto their homes so we felt this was a good fit.”

To date, “Off the Street” has six vendors participating, who, along with volunteers, have made and sold  1,500 frames during the last year. Frames are available on the five ACCESSORIES website for $15 each and at many Chicago-area boutiques.  Use the code “CDEL” when ordering online or via phone and five dollars for each frame sold will be donated to CDEL; 15 percent is donated to StreetWise.  The frames, which can be customized with corporate logos, can also be purchased in bulk quantities.

““The frames are beautiful, socially conscious, Chicago-centric and eco-friendly, so they make great corporate gifts,” says Hutchison.

In addition to the “Off the Street” program, five ACCESSORIES sells handbags, jewelry, and home accessories from five locations around the world through its web site, a retail space and arts fairs. The company’s mission is to create income-generating programs; foster the use of sustainable materials, and donate a portion of revenues to worthy charitable causes.
