Dec. 14, 2010 - PRLog -- On January the 4th, VAT is set to rise from 17.5% to 20% as Chancellor George Osborne tries to help balance Britain’s books. The tax rise angers a huge percentage of the population as most people are still currently trying to recover from the recent economic depression.

A shop assistant from London says “It will hurt people who haven't got a lot of money and who don't earn that much... I don't think it's fair at all." A charity campaigner expressed his thoughts by saying it was “outrageous” and that “it's going to drive some of the important investors here in London away. If you put up VAT like that, people will run away to other countries like Japan, China... it's going to be harmful for the economy, definitely."

Not everyone sees the decision to increase tax as nonsensical and unnecessary however, a 53 year old telecommunications technical consultant from Henley-on-Thames in Berkshire expressed that he thought the changes made perfectly good sense and that the taxation has got to rise somehow, the government needs more money, so we are all going to end up paying for it one way or another. He also explains that it is probably the fairest way to handle it, with richer people more than likely buying more goods and therefore paying more. The new government had to find a way of getting more money and by doing it this way they are giving the public a bit more choice on how they “pay” their part, rather than simply taking the money through income tax.

The Guardian are reporting that 60% of retailers and consumer good makers are planning to use the VAT inflation to increase their prices and take advantage. Many small businesses will see the increase as a way to try and get some of the money they lost in the recession back by increasing prices by more than 2.5%, assuming buyers will not notice.

Not all companies will be taking advantage of the VAT increase though. Jokers’ Masquerade Fancy Dress, the UK’s largest online retailer of fancy dress, has announced that not only is it not seizing the opportunity to raise prices, but it is going to absorb the 2.5% increase in VAT on its products, allowing customers to continue having fun in its costumes for no extra cost. The bold move shows that Jokers’ Masquerade, at http://www.joke.co.uk, is seeing the rise as an opportunity to stand out from other retailers and demonstrate that customer loyalty and value for money are more important than the opportunity to make a fast buck.
