Follow on Google News | City Of Vision And Progress Reveals HistoryLocal authors chronicle the history of Wyoming in more than 200 vintage images
By: Mikey Tabakian Wyoming, Michigan, became a city in 1959, the same year Alaska and Hawaii became states, but its history began more than a century earlier. The first permanent settlers came in 1832, and in 1848 the regions split, with the northern portion becoming Wyoming and the southern Byron Center. Wyoming flourished. The farmers came first with the businesses that supported them, and industry followed. The various gypsum mines were among the earliest arrivals. General Motors built a stamping plant on Thirty-sixth Street that helped pull the township out of the Great Depression in 1936. Wyoming became “the City of Vision and Progress.” Highlights of Wyoming: • Features more than 200 vintage images from public archives of the Wyoming Historical Society as well as private collections • Showcases everyday life in Wyoming from the beaches at Lamar Park to the sports events at Bigelow Field and the Godwin High School Fieldhouse • Chronicles the birth and rise of industry starting with the General Motors plant in 1936 Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at www.arcadiapublishing.com or (888)-313-2665.
