Dec. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Not everyone knows how to make a garden look pretty and stay healthy.  To grow a beautiful, healthy garden there are a number of different places you can go to find information.  Whether you are looking for annuals, perennials, flowering plants, vegetables or other nursery stock you can find ideas of what to plant and how to grow it in many places.  Magazines and gardening books are a great place to look for ideas because you can use the outdoor images as inspiration.  For information about preparing, planting and maintaining a garden consider your local gardening TV program.  Looking at what your neighbours have done with their gardens is a great way to get inspired.  When it comes to completing the work and getting ideas talk to friends and relatives to see what has worked, what hasn't and whether they can help you. To get free help and advice you should consider following a daily garden blog or visiting a garden website.  Garden centres will help you out when you encounter problems or unexpected issues..

Once you have some ideas in place about what you want your garden to look like then you need to try to put together a design plan.  The design you choose will depend on your goals for the garden and what you plan to use it for.  Think about what will grown in your climate easily when you determine your design.  The type of drainage system in place and the quality of soil you have to work with will impact your design.  A good design plan is realistic, cost effective and flexible.  You should consider whether you want to plant a small garden patch or redesign your entire front or back yard.  Do you need to use aggregates and stone?  Will your design require you to purchase sod, grass seed, rocks or flagstones?  Will you be using soil or mulches? Are you planning on adding water features like a waterfall or pond? If you plan out what you want to do ahead of time it will be easier for you to cost out your ideas and have a goal in mind before you start to buy the materials you need..

A gardening budget is important to factor into your project planning.  Before you decide the type of gardening job you want to tackle you need to set a realistic budget. Not only do you want to set your budget you want to ensure you stick to it.  Sticking to your budget means that you need to find as many materials and plants on sale as possible. Weekly flyers and sales at your local garden centre is a great way to find deals.  You need to balance cost with purchasing healthy plants though because if you buy unhealthy plants it will be expensive to replace them.  It can be expensive to place an unhealthy plant in your garden because it can spread disease into other garden areas.  You need to balance budget with quality, healthy plants..

You will easily find a number of great tips for your garden once you start looking for them.  You can cut down on labour and maintenance and keep you garden weed free by purchasing plants that are weed resistant.  Choosing ground hugging plants is a great way to suppress weeds naturally.  Colourful plants can sometimes be difficult to maintain so an alternative to adding colour to your garden is to use colourful and pretty planting containers, boxes and pots.  To keep your garden looking neat you can use border edging which will also keep invasive plants under control. You can keep your plants healthy by preparing them for dry spells by mixing water-strong granules into the top 10cm of soil.  To make your lawn easier to maintain consider replacing part of it with hardwood decking, gravel or paving and then planting plants along the edges.  There are numerous tips and advice out there to help you keep your garden healthy..
