Europe invests in Nuclear New Build projects as the demand for energy grows

Dec. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Across Europe we are seeing a growing interest and new projects for Nuclear New Build come in to play. One sign of European investment came from a statement from Westinghouse Electric Co. the other day, announcing it has won a contract to build an emergency power supply facility for a Swiss nuclear power.

“The demand for energy in Switzerland continues to grow, and Axpo AG has been proactive in addressing that need. We are pleased to have been awarded this contract to ensure that the Beznau plant — the country’s oldest commercial nuclear plant — continues to generate safe, clean and efficient nuclear power,” said Norbert Haspel, Westinghouse’s regional managing director for Central Europe, in a written statement.

Jörn-Erik Mantz, Head of Nuclear New Build at RWE Technology GmbH, had this to say about the place of Nuclear in the future power mix; "Nuclear is supposed to be one of the prime forms of carbon dioxide-free generation and will thus play a significant role in combinational renewable sources to allow Europe a carbon-free generation mix."

And Lady Barbara Judge, former Chairman of the UK Atomic Energy Authority; "I think nuclear is really on the up. There are three important problems today in the energy sector. One, is energy independence, do we have enough energy independence? And climate change; are we going to pollute the atmosphere for our generations to come? Nuclear is the one source of energy that actually is the answer to all of those questions. If you build a new nuclear power plant, if you put it in your own country, you will have fuel generation, as much as you build, 24/7, it doesn’t emit carbon; so people are thinking about nuclear as they never have before, or at least not in the past 20 years."
