Dec. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- The Czech Republic's auto sector has continued to perform impressively. While BMI expects that the Czech car market will continue to see limited growth due to continued economic difficulties, production is expected to grow substantially on the back of strong export growth. The fallout of the economic crisis continues to pose challenges, but producers in the Czech Republic, especially Skoda, have adapted to the new environment quite successfully.

Overall car production has increased 13% year-on-year (y-o-y) in the first nine months of 2010. The 9M10 production figures show that 803,846 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were produced in the Czech Republic. The head of the country's automotive industry association SAP, Martin Jahn, says production this year has a chance of exceeding 1mn units, if production grows a further 5% in Q410. This would be an important milestone in the Czech auto industry and would cement its position as one of the Czech Republic's most important sectors.

Broken down by major producers, Skoda saw production in the Czech Republic grow by 8% to 413,465 units. In far more impressive growth, Hyundai Nosovice saw its production grow by 84% to 143,839 units over the same period. Toyota/Peugeot's TPCA arm in the Czech Republic did, however, see its production drop by 0.4% to 246,532 units. Exports, the main driver of Czech auto production, grew by 16%. This rapid growth in exports occurred despite the continued rise of the Czech Koruna, one of the best performing currencies in recent times. The domestic market, on the other hand, saw 9.5% sales growth. 47,662 units were sold in the 9M10 period.

Skoda has seen a remarkable improvement in its financial position in 2010. While much of the car industry has experienced better circumstances, Skoda has seen some of the most impressive results in its history. The firm recently posted a profit of CZK6bn (US$343mn) for the first nine months of 2010. This figure is 115% higher than the 9M09 figure. The 2009 was somewhat of a difficult year for Skoda, however it still managed to maintain profitability with profits falling 68% from 2008 to CZK3.46 (US$198mn). Additionally, the workforce size shrank by 1%, so that Skoda now employs 24,808 workers.

Most impressively, Skoda has seen its global sales reach the highest level the firm has ever experienced. It sold 568,900 units in the 9M10 period. This is 12.8% higher than the same production in 2009. Much of this growth occurred outside of its Czech home market, with sales in China growing 65% to 134,470 units. Sales in India grew by over a third to 14,224 units, while Russian sales grew 35% to 34,273.

These three markets are particularly important for Skoda. Together they make up just under a third of sales and are expected to form the basis of future growth. Continued success in the three states will be required if the firm is to meet its target of more than doubling sales to 1.5mn units a year by 2020. A great number of these vehicles are not built in the Czech Republic. The firm has production facilities in India and China. If this dramatic sales growth target is met, then it is expected that the bulk of Skoda's production will occur outside of the Czech Republic.
