New Fixed Networks market report from Business Monitor International: "Norway Telecommunications Report Q1 2011"

Dec. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- BMI's Q111 Norway Telecommunications Report contains updated growth forecasts for the development of the country's mobile, fixed-line, broadband, internet and 3G subscriber markets, taking into account trends witnessed in a mature market that is still feeling the after-effects of the global recession. These forecasts have been extended to 2015, and generally reflect slower growth than previously expected over the latter part of the period under assessment.

Mobile and broadband markets are becoming increasingly interlinked in Norway, meaning that customers are becoming more inclined to adopt a single wireless connection for all of their communications needs. Mobile operators are consequentially more focused on migrating customers to postpay and mobile broadband services than tackling the lower end of the market, where the last remaining organic growth opportunities lie. At the same time, slowing fixed broadband usage is being offset by rising mobile broadband adoption, and it is mobile that is now the real engine of growth in the broadband market. As the largest multiservice operator, Telenor remains the dominant player, despite ceding further market share to rivals such as Veltelo, Telio and get. Strangely, TeliaSonera-backed NetCom has failed to capitalise on its parent's success in the smartphone and mobile data service arenas, and continues to exhibit disappointing growth, which is dragging down average ARPUs. The country's MVNOs are doing well in the meantime, and their focus on low-cost services is also keeping ARPU growth in check. The Norwegian mobile market now has few organic growth opportunities ahead of it and this is reflected in our forecasts, which envisage growth of just 11% between 2010 and 2015. It seems that newcomers ICE and Mobile Norway will have little or no impact on these figures.

As of June 2010, around 71% of households and 34% of the country's inhabitants took fixed broadband services. The number of fixed broadband connections grew by just 5.1% year-on-year (y-o-y) as customers increasingly opted for mobile accesses. For 2010 as a whole, we envisage growth of less than 4%, which will be offset by growth of around 29% in mobile broadband connections. By 2015, we expect to see 3.064mn fixed and mobile broadband customers, equivalent to 60.5% connections per 100 inhabitants.

The decline in fixed-line usage continues unabated, and BMI has revised existing forecasts for the next five years. The number of fixed lines fell by 5.9% in 2009, and we expect a similar rate of decline in 2010, ending the year with 1.685mn connections. By 2015, we expect a user base of 1.473mn fixed lines, a penetration rate of around 29%.
