Dec. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- A year on since it launched, UK healthcare jobs web site, http://www.Healthcarejobsite.co.uk, has had an exciting time. At a Government level it’s been a year when health has been under even more scrutiny than usual. It was one of the hottest themes of the General Election with each party claiming it would protect health spending. Later it became one of the most fascinating subjects in the new coalition Government’s dramatic spending review.

Matt Farrah, director of Niche Jobs Ltd, the company behind http://www.Healthcarejobsite.co.uk, explained the surprises. “I suppose a year ago we just didn’t foresee everything. I did forecast and hope to see around 60 clients, with a few thousand jobs, and over 400 doctor jobs and almost 800 medical sales jobs. So... so far so good! I’m pleased to see that plan realised. But what I didn’t count on was launching in a market where so much was going to happen at the macro-economic and media level!

“It’s therefore been a little nerve-wracking,” Matt admitted. In recruitment terms healthcare jobs are often considered recession proof. “Health isn’t beyond the reach of recession or budget cuts. That’s what has been made clear. The fact that NHS budgets are to rise, while most other budgets are being cut doesn’t mean that health somehow impregnable. Anyone thinking healthcare jobs are recession proof is being naive.”

In real terms, of course, the health care spending increase is small (a 0.3% real-terms increase over the next 5 years). While any increase is cause for celebration, the scrutiny healthcare and the NHS has had has impacted the healthcare jobs market.

http://www.Healthcarejobsite.co.uk has launched into a sector that’s very ready to look for savings and to buy with extreme caution. Most of our clients are recruitment agencies. I would say that all of those agencies who are part of the NHS Framework will have seen falling vacancies over the past 12 months. Even with its protected budgets the message, either said or unsaid, has been that recruitment needs to be acted on with prudence and caution.

“I heard the other day that NHS recruitment spend has been hauled in twice this year due to extreme nervousness - once prior to the election and then again prior to the spending review.”

The hope is of course, that now that the future is more clear, the nervousness will dissipate. “That’s why I’m surprised. After all that healthcare has been through during 2010, I’m surprised that we’re on target in terms of jobs and client numbers on Healthcarejobsite.co.uk. The fact seems to be that the jobs are still there. The demand for skills hasn’t diminished, and neither has the number of skilled healthcare jobseekers looking to take their career forward.”
