Dec. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- In 1951 Volkswagen subcontracted design and installation of the interior of its campervans’ to Westfalia; they were a coach building company located in the German region of Westphalia.   Westphalia was responsible for fitting the vans with various different internal options and many of their ingenious and the space saving designs are still installed in Campervans today.

An innovative scheme encouraged people to travel as tourists to Germany, where they could pick up their campers and take them home this helped the spread of VW Campervans, large numbers were bought by British and US servicemen stationed in Germany, who shipped them back to the home and then as a result of demand VW campers were soon available from Volkswagen dealers round the world.

So what was behind its success ask a Campervan owner and they will tell you it is due to the fixtures and fittings which mirrored the interior of a 1950’s home but were made to fit and scaled to work perfectly inside the small vans a real home on wheels. Remember this was before the assault of cheap package holidays and charter flights, the camper provided people with an affordable way to take holidays touring around in comfort and style.

VW Campers have a large variety of fold out seating options for sleeping, not forgetting the ’Rock 'n Roll bed’.  Interiors were lined with plywood panels and then a huge number of different storage cupboard options were available.  Some of them had Sinks, Water Tanks with pumps and electrical hook ups to power lights and other equipment.  There were other fantastic options such as a children’s cot across the front driver and passenger seats, storage boxes and a swing table.  Then In 1968 they introduced the ‘pop-top’ which revolutionised the versatility of the camper allowing for extra headspace and comfort these took off and were very popular especially in the Bay Window Campervans also introduced in 1968, with the introduction of the optional ‘pop-top’ there was also the option of two bunk beds for children on either side of the van.
