Kamloops Yoga Instructor Holds Fund Raiser For Hungry Families

Most participants know that the practice of yoga has the power to feed the body and mind of the individual. But now, students in the Kamloops area can help feed the world as well.

Dec. 3, 2010 - PRLog -- On Saturday, December 11 from 10 to 11:15 a.m., Participants at the Kamloops Yoga Fitness Boot Camp Fundraiser will have the opportunity to not only strengthen their body and spirit but help end world hunger at the boot camp’s fundraiser for the World Vision organization.

The “FUNdraiser”, as Kamloops Yoga Boot Camp instructor Katrina Ariel terms it, is one of a series of monthly events designed to bring awareness to the problem of international hunger and poverty, and to do so in a fun, healthy environment.

“I was inspired to start the FUNdraisers for a number of reasons,” explained Ariel. “The charities are, of course, such a big part of it and it feels great to be able to offer a class that is totally dedicated to supporting those who need a helping hand.

“The nature of yoga is that everything and everyone is interconnected, so donating my time and having students donate their money to support others is a perfect expression of that philosophy.”

The boot camp is open to students of all levels and is highlighted by Ariel’s unique hands-on approach to yoga training and fitness.

“I give modifications, so someone who is just starting to build strength and get back in shape can participate alongside someone who is in awesome shape and working to their own edge,” explained Ariel. “We have lots of fun while we do a challenging workout.”

That satisfying feeling is only amplified by the opportunity to give back to the world-at-large through the World Vision fundraising effort. Previous FUNdraisers, such as the one in October of 2009, not only raised money for the Kamloops Food Bank but also saw participants donate food to be distributed to the organization as well.

With this month’s FUNdraiser, the Kamloops Yoga Boot Camp will donate all proceeds to World Vision, a humanitarian organization that has been assisting children, families and communities in combating the problems of poverty and injustice for more than 60 years. World Vision assists more than 100 million people of all nationalities and races in almost 100 countries around the world.

“I've chosen World Vision because they have a wide variety of programs that benefit different countries and are very focused on empowering people by giving them training and tools to be self sustainable,” Ariel said. “That feels good, for me and for the people who come to the class and donate.

“The community here in Kamloops has such a big heart and to get together like this, get an incredible workout and balance it with yoga, it builds the sense of contribution.”

The feedback on the Yoga Boot Camp has been incredible as you can see here in the video.
