Incoming Board Chairman Benjamin E. Jones, President and CEO of Lightning Supply Inc., Teaneck, N.J., and most recently the Board’s Vice Chairman and Treasurer, commented on what he expects to accomplish during his tenure. “Going forward, we will focus on rejuvenating the organization, securing its place in an evolving domestic and global environment. As an organization that is almost forty years old, we want to establish ourselves more forcefully as a viable entity, providing a meaningful service to its members,” Jones said. “That’s really what we will be trying to accomplish and we’re well aware that we’ll be taking on a number of issues in the economy as we do so.”
Jones succeeds Gregory L. Reid, Esq., managing director of the New York law firm Reid Rodriguez & Rouse, LLP, who served two three-year terms as Chairman. Reid now becomes a non-officer director and the NMBC’s corporate counsel. He reflected on his years as Chairman. “During the last five years the NMBC has been at the cutting edge of societal and economic changes fueled by innovations in telecommunications hardware and Internet software. Moreover, we have in the United States a president whose election was unthinkable a mere ten years ago and a worldwide economic decline on a scale comparable to the Great Depression. Throughout all of these changes, the NMBC has endured and continues to provide leadership and direction to women and minority entrepreneurs who are courageously facing an uncertain economic landscape. It has been my privilege and honor to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the NMBC during this exciting time and share in both the successes and challenges of our membership. I salute my colleagues and wish them God’s speed as they continue this journey.”
John F. Robinson, the NMBC’s President and CEO, said, “We thank Greg for his six years of service to the NMBC membership, and by extension to the small, minority, women-owned and veteran-owned business community as a whole. The fact that he will continue to serve on the board as a Director makes for a seamless transition to the Chairmanship of Ben Jones. For his part, Ben brings more than thirty years’ experience to the table as an entrepreneur, a former President of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, which was established in 1972, the same year as the NMBC, and as a member of the NMBC Board since 2000.”
In other Board changes, Dawn Henning, Vice President of business development at Computer Professional Learning Center, Inc., and chair of the NMBC’s Women’s Business Committee, will serve as vice chair of entire organization;
Michael Robinson said innovation, moving the NMBC beyond traditional ways of doing things, and developing new ideas will be the platform of his function as treasurer. “I want to find innovative ways to move the NMBC forward in this challenging economy and beyond, and also manage its resources effectively so we can remain current as an organization. In challenging economic times one has to find ways around the difficulties facing most companies,” he said.
Clancy added, “There are many organizations that a small business can currently join. However, in this economy we have to be very selective in terms of which organization our time and resources would most benefit from. I am honored to be a new member of the NMBC Board. My goal is to make inroads for women-owned financial firms to provide services to large financial institutions, for them to be given the opportunity to show the added value we can provide to firms in an otherwise traditionally male-dominated financial industry.”
Ramon Gil, Founder, president and CEO of the multicultural marketing and graphic design firm Fresh Concentrate, LLC, Forrest R. Taylor, president and CEO of Prowess Initiatives and Analysis consultancy, and Renee M. Brown, president and CEO of C.W. Brown and Company will remain as Board Directors through the end of their terms in 2012. Brown will also continue as Board secretary.
