“Latism is dedicated to engaging and empowering digital communities in online discourses that reflect the needs and best interests of the Hispanic community,” says LATISM Founder Ana Roca Castro. “Supporting the CDC’s efforts to bring attention to this critical issue – flu vaccinations among Hispanics – and providing our audience with relevant and important information on flu safety leading up to, and after, the National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW), Dec. 5-11, is a natural fit for us.” Last year, Hispanics were hospitalized from flu complications at almost twice the rate of non-Hispanic whites. The higher rates of hospitalizations among Hispanics may be due to the fact that these groups have higher rates of asthma and diabetes, diseases known to increase the risk of flu complications. This year, the Department of Health and Human Services, the CDC and state and local public health officials are continuing to work with leaders in Hispanic communities on flu protection. “We strongly encourage the LATISM community to fully utilize the information and resources available on the CDC's website in addition to extending this information to family members, peers and individuals outside of social media,” concludes Roca-Castro.
