2010 ASE Technician of the Year Award Winner!

Robert Young with Beckwith’s Car Care in Humble, Texas, has been awarded the 2010 ASE’s (Automotive Service Excellence) Automotive Technician of the Year Award, which is huge in the industry.

The stars in Texas shine a little brighter today and it’s all because of Robert Young with Beckwith’s Car Care! You see, he might seem like all the other automotive technicians in the world, everyone in his industry knows he’s nothing short of a superstar!

Rob, as he is often called, was nominated for this award by Wayne Truax, Regional Manager for NAPA (National Automotive Parts Association). Truax said this annual award is one of the highest honors bestowed to individuals in this industry. The reason he nominated Rob is because of his dedication to his craft and his desire to be the best in skillfulness and service to his customers.

ASE takes its time choosing the winners, and makes their choices by scrutinizing each candidate extensively. Council members review and evaluate on many levels of accomplishments and skill levels.

Rob had no problem in this area because his impressive list of accomplishments include a total of ten certifications (which require recertification every 4 or 5 years). He also received a perfect score on his Advanced Engine Performance Certification (being one of the very few to ever achieve this goal).

So, how did Rob feel about winning? He said he was thrilled and it came as quite a shock. In fact, when he heard the news he had been nominated, he was vacationing in New Mexico at the time.

When asked how he felt about working at Beckwith’s Car Care, a woman-owned business, he said, “I really enjoy the easy going, laid back environment.” He continued by saying of his boss, Lynn Beckwith, “There’s not a better boss around. She takes good care of her people and even went through the trouble to have a special lift installed to accommodate my 6’ 6” frame. Now that’s really going that extra mile in my opinion.”

Rob has been in this industry since 1986 and loves everything about his job. He takes great pride in what he calls, “fixing hard to fix cars.”

Lynn said of Rob, “He’s the type of guy that shows a tremendous amount of care towards our customers and has what I like to call a ‘Mechanic’s Heart’.”

On a personal note, Lynn shared that Rob participates in a lot of community activities and participates in many school activities like volunteering to chaperone his daughter’s band bus on road trips. For one event, the “gentle giant” even dressed up in a coconut bra for a good cause and fundraiser. He said he volunteered to do this in hopes of bringing in some laughs while also bringing in some money.
