By: Solid Waste Management Round Table Bengaluru * * * REVISED DATE AND TIME * * * BDA ON WAY TO ZERO WASTE MANAGEMENT SWMRT works with BDA HQ to introduce recycling at Kumarapark West Following the recent launch of solid waste management facilities at the BBMP’s head office, tomorrow (Friday December 3rd) sees the inauguration by commissioner Bharat Lal Meena of the BDA campus’s facility for segregating, recycling, and composting of garbage. The facility, launched in conjunction with the Solid Waste Management Round Table Bengaluru (SWMRT), will serve the three acre site in Kumarapark West, which is home to more than 800 BDA officers and more than 600 visitors each day. SWMRT members have been working with staff at the BDA HQ for the last six weeks to introduce a simple waste management system which is housed on the site where their waste was previously dumped. Already during the introduction phase, dry waste recyclers have collected more than 132kg of paper and 75kg of plastic, waste otherwise destined for landfill. In addition, approximately one tonne of ‘wet’ canteen and garden waste has been composted which can be used to fertilise the campus landscape, which is a regular winner at the annual Lalbagh Horticultural Show. Mr N S Ramakanth, whose passion is to restore Bengaluru as the garden city from the garbage city it has become has overseen, this project on behalf of SWMRT and says: “All BDA layouts should have space earmarked for waste management as part of their civic amenities, from simple dry waste storage facilities to decentralized composting facilities of garden and park waste, even food waste if possible. This will ensure that residents automatically adopt a system of segregation and solid waste management right from the time the layouts are formed.” Individuals or corporates wanting to convert their home or workplace towards zero waste management can call 99161 02848, email swmrt.cbengaluru@ Notes to Editors Photographers and reporters are welcome to attend the inauguration by Commissioner Bharat Lal Meena at 11am, Friday, December 3rd. The vision of the SWMRT is to bring the Municipal Waste Management Rules 2000 and its recommendations to life in Bengaluru by promoting the all important basic step of segregating waste at source and adoption of the 3R’s - reduce, reuse, recycle. A simple change in mindset can curtail and drastically reduce the amount of garbage that needlessly makes its way into landfills or worse still, onto the city’s streets. End
