The research was conducted after MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk noticed a large increase in clothing searches made on the male section of the website; and set out to discover if this was in relation to Christmas gifts. 1, 398 men were subsequently polled, asked questions surrounding their gift wish lists this year.
Men taking part in the study were asked the multiple-answer question, “What type of gift (s) would you like to receive this Christmas?” to which the top 5 answers were as follows:
1) Clothing – 62%
2) Electronic Goods (camera, MP3, console etc.) – 49%
3) Video Games – 42%
4) Music/ DVD/ Blu-Ray Discs – 39%
5) Hair/ Skincare Products – 36%
Those who chose ‘clothing’
1) Gilet – 34%
2) Checked Shirt – 28%
3) Cardigan – 22%
4) Quilted jacket – 16%
5) Jumper – 12%
Further to this, 4% of the men who want clothing for Christmas stated that they were after a pair of UGG boots.
Of the men who stated that they wanted clothing for Christmas, over half, 56%, explained that they wanted their girlfriend to buy clothing for them; whilst a quarter, 24%, stated that they had asked their mother to.
Furthermore, three fifths, 61%, of the men who took part in the study explained that they preferred to receive clothing as gifts at Christmas, rather than buy clothing themselves throughout the year.
Andy Barr, marketing director of MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, commented on the findings:
“We expected to see a rise in the last week of searches for gifts on our site, but the huge rise in numbers of searches for men’s clothing was unexpected. As a result, we wanted to look into how many men really wanted clothing for Christmas, and were surprised to see that it was the most popular item on the majority of men’s wish lists; beating electronics and video games to the mark.”
“Many men are too scared to trust themselves to buy the clothing they want throughout the year, and leave it to their other halves at Christmas. Our MyCelebrityFashion site aims to help blokes out in this respect, showing them the top trends and exactly where they can buy them, without the hassle of trawling round the shops. Perhaps we need to set a New Year’s Resolution for men of the country to be braver, and trusts their clothing decisions: “I shall not leave my clothes shopping down to my girlfriend/mum this year.”
