Dec. 2, 2010 - PRLog -- Development specialist Bryce Biggs will speak on "One more time ... how do we motivate people?" at the annual Department of Arts and Culture KwaZulu-Natal conference on "Information for Social Cohesion and Prosperity' which is being held at the ICC Durban from 1 to 3 December 2010.

Bryce will draw on the work of Daniel Pink - as described in his book "Drive - the surprising truth about what motivates us."

Much of the currently applied theory on motivation draws on work conducted from the 1940s to 1960s. Recent research argues that people have a strong drive  for self determination - with an innate psychological need for competence, autonomy, and relatedness.

Bryce will illustrate one of Pink's conclusions that extrinsic motivation is relevant in a relatively limited area of human endeavor. Intrinsic motivation - focused around autonomy, mastery, and purpose - takes us much further.

Attendees will have the opportunity to debate and recommend on whether Pink's "Type I Toolkit" can be applied in public service settings.

A video - illustrating some of Pink's views - can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc
