Dec. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Peachland, BC CANADA – Wishbone Site Furnishings, a Langley, BC manufacturer of park furniture made from recycled materials, announces the completion and final installation of new innovative park benches, picnic tables, waste and recycle receptacles and LED bollards for the Centennial Way pathway along Beach Avenue in Peachland.

The Beach Avenue multi-use pathway was named Centennial Way in honour of Peachland’s 100 year anniversary in 2009. The project consists of a 1.2 kilometer extension to the existing pathway along the beachfront. The project was funded by the federal and provincial Infrastructure Stimulus Fund which covered two-thirds of the estimated $3,390,000 project cost.

"The District of Peachland, along with the Landscape Architect – Urban Systems, worked closely with us," says John Jansen, President of Wishbone, "They wanted to blend the old with the new, in terms of style and colour, but also make way for some exciting new technologies that we had developed."

Wishbone was able to match colour with existing lamp standards, while still utilizing recyclable materials at every opportunity. The 26 benches, 8 picnic tables, 16 waste/recycling receptacles and 58 bollards used in the project have the equivalent of 4900 LBS of recycled plastics (over 25,000 food and beverage containers) and 1700 LBS of
recycled aluminum (over 65 car and truck rims).

Mayor Keith Fielding of Peachland has encouraged the community to “learn about the special features of the project” including the recycled materials that have gone into the furnishings. Not only is this good for the environment (reallocating materials that would otherwise be destined to landfills), but the site furnishings are also virtually maintenance free, which makes their “in place costs” very attractive to Peachland council.

John Jansen adds, "Besides the environmental aspects of the furnishings, Peachland is first municipality in North America to claim two firsts regarding park furniture. Certain benches along the pathway have an LED strip under the seat, connected to a network of low voltage wiring via one of the legs of the bench. This creates an ambiance for an evening stroll, and additional safety for those out on a walk on warm summer nights. We also added foot pedals for the waste and recycling receptacles – no one wants to touch a swing door these days… a foot pedal that opens the swing door is intuitive, more sanitary and the swing door keeps the critters and bugs out.”

Wishbone has prepared this promotional video highlighting the furnishings used in this project – recycling never looked so good:
