Follow on Google News | Report Card Averages are B’s at the J.C. Coleman Afterschool Program at the Delaware CenterThirty two report cards were collected at the J.C. Coleman Program, and all averages were B’s. The variety of opportunities provided to these kids had an impact on their grades.
By: Jo Ann Coleman President/CEO Why are the results so favorable? Perhaps contributing factors include homework help, tutorials, and a variety of enrichment activities including science, current events, arts and crafts, media appreciation, sports and recreation, and literacy. Perhaps the cooking class for select kids, the time in the computer lab, the motivational speaker who comes every other week, or our nutrition classes held by Second Harvest every two weeks are helping to boost grades. Perhaps the volunteer work the participants do for the Mission or the assistance they bring to the residents of the local retirement home when playing bingo benefit academic achievement. Perhaps the fund-raisers like car washes and spaghetti suppers engage the students. Or perhaps the outstanding outcomes are the byproduct of all of the above! The breakdown of the report card grades is fantastic: language arts 84%, mathematics 81%, social studies 85%, science 82%, reading 83%, and writing 87%. The conduct grades are also noteworthy: 34% ranked excellent, 60% ranked satisfactory, and 6% ranked needs improvement. Evidence supports the fact the J.C. Coleman Afterschool Program at the John S. Delaware Center has been successful in reaching its goal of helping to improve grades. Exactly how that goal was reached is unclear: that it was reached is clear. The variety of opportunities available to the Afterschool kids more than likely helped their grades. # # # About the mission of The J.C. Coleman Foundation, Inc. is to improve the academics, life skills, and attitudes of at-risk pre-teens and teens through a variety of creative, innovative, non-traditional and collaborative support services.
