In a new pictorial history book by local authors Muff Boyd and James H. Clark, over 200 vintage photographs capture the essence and colorful history of Georgetown. Presidents and other dignitaries have visited this area over the past 200-plus years and millions have luxuriated in the waters of the nearby beaches for generations. The authors hope their work will “inspire local residents to learn more about what is in their own backyards. After reading Georgetown and Winyah Bay we hope that readers in other areas may visit Georgetown to ‘see what all the fuss is about.’” Highlights of Georgetown and Winyah Bay: • Theodosia Burr Allston, daughter of Vice President Aaron Burr, married a wealthy Georgetown planter in 1801 • The majority of the photographs in the book come from the Georgetown County Library’s Digital Collection • Georgetown has at least three American firsts: one of the first free schools in America, the first African American ever to be elected and serve in Congress and the first building in the colonies built as a bank Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at 888.313.2665 or www.arcadiapublishing.com.
