Nov. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- More than half of companies that experience disaster shut down within two years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. With this is mind, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) is reminding business owners that December is Write a Business Plan Month, and a little preparation now could go a long way in helping protect your organization in 2011 and into the future.

GEMA’s emergency preparedness campaign Ready Georgia is helping local businesses develop contingency plans and is offering resources, checklists and detailed information on how Georgia organizations can prepare for an emergency and make a plan for what to do if disaster strikes.

“Protecting your business investment means knowing how to react to any emergency situation,” said Lisa Janak Newman, spokesperson for GEMA. “Around half of all businesses that experience a disaster and don’t have effective plans fail within the 12 months that follow. With numbers like that, it’s hard to say it isn’t worth the time to implement a preparedness plan.”

Ready Georgia offers local companies a free, downloadable “Ready Your Business Guide” that outlines the 12-point program to business continuity planning. The guide includes a vulnerability assessment, a workplace emergency supply kit checklist, an insurance coverage review, as well as a how-to for data protection, storage and recovery.

The campaign also offers a list of considerations for every business when mapping out an emergency plan.

Plan to Stay in Business
Plan in advance to manage any emergency situation. Assess the situation, use common sense and available resources to take care of yourself, your co-workers and your business's recovery.
•   Be Informed: Know what kinds of emergencies might affect your company.
•   Continuity Planning: Carefully assess how your company functions, both internally and externally.
•   Emergency Planning: Your employees and co-workers are your business's most important and valuable asset.
•   Emergency Supplies: Think first about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth.
•   Deciding to Stay or Go: Shelter-in-place or evacuate, plan for both possibilities.
•   Fire Safety: Fire is the most common of all business disasters.
•   Influenza Pandemic: Take steps to prepare for and respond to an influenza pandemic.

Talk to Your People
A continuity plan is only as good as the people who know how to implement it.  Communicate regularly with employees before, during and after an incident.
•   Involve Co-Workers: Include people from all levels in emergency planning.
•   Practice the Plan: Drills and exercises will help you prepare.
•   Promote Preparedness: Encourage your employees and their families to: Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Be Informed.
•   Crisis Communication Plan: Detail how you will be in contact with employees, customers and others during and after a disaster.
•   Employee Health: People who have experienced a disaster may have special recovery needs.

Protect Your Investment
In addition to emergency planning, there are steps you can take to both safeguard your company and secure your physical assets.
•   Insurance Coverage: Policies vary, meet with your provider to review current coverage.
•   Utility Disruptions: Prepare for extended outages during and after a disaster.
•   Facilities, Buildings & Plants: Take steps to secure physical assets.
•   Equipment: Conduct a room-by-room walk-through to determine what needs to be secured.
•   Cyber Security: Protect your data and information technology systems.
