Nov. 26, 2010 - PRLog -- Enrolled Agent Tommy Brown recently issued a warning to individuals with an IRS tax debt who might be tempted to negotiate with the IRS on their own. Citing complicated and constantly-changing tax laws, Brown noted that Enrolled Agents are required to complete 72 hours of coursework within a three year window in order to maintain their  license, and a minimum of 16 hours per year. This is in addition to the 2 hours of ethics training that is also required.

Also noting that the role of the IRS is to collect as much money as possible from the taxpayers, Brown recommended having an experienced professional looking out for your interests. And since every situation is unique, a tax resolution specialist can analyze the situation correctly and choose the correct resolution.

Finally, the Enrolled Agent pointed out how time-consuming and stressful dealing with the IRS or state taxing authority can be. Not only does it take time to prepare the required documentation and other paperwork, but the IRS can be slow to respond. As an example, Brown revealed that the negotiation of an offer in compromise can take up to two years to finalize.
