Nov. 24, 2010 - PRLog -- California Scooter Company established the 150cc land speed scooter record at 74 mph this weekend at the first annual Motor Scooter International Land Speed Record Federation (MSILSF) time trials.   The event took place on an abandoned section of Route 66 in southern California’s Cajon Pass area.  The California Scooter Company motorcycle, piloted by Sylvain Binau, set the record in the 150cc Hybrid class.  The Hybrid class is a category established for non-step-through scooters (other scooters run in the conventional scooter class).  The California Scooter entry was also faster than scooters in the standard 150cc class.

California Scooter Company entered a specially-prepared version of its standard “Classic” model with a modified engine and chassis.   The engine featured higher compression, a higher lift and longer duration cam profile, a larger carburetor, and friction-reduction features.   The California Scooter bike also had several weight reduction modifications, which dropped its weight from 240 to just under 200 lbs.

“We are quite pleased with our performance in the first annual land speed scooter event,” said Steve Seidner, California Scooter Company President and Chief Executive Officer.  “Our rider, Sylvain Binau, and our bike builders did an outstanding job.  Many of the competitors modified their street scooters to compete in this great event.   This is hot rodding at its finest, and we’re proud to have been a part of it.”  Seidner went on to say that his company is considering offering a no-frills, performance-oriented version of its basic bike to provide a low-cost avenue to scooter competition.  “We had a lot of fun in this event, and we want others to be able to do the same,” Seidner said.

California Scooter Company drew its inspiration for the retro-styled CSC bikes from the Mustang motorcycle manufactured in Glendale from 1947 to 1962.   California Scooter’s participation in the land speed record trials this past weekend was inspired by Walt Fulton setting a Mustang land speed record at over 100 mph in the 1950s.   Members of the Mustang Motorcycle Club (a group of enthusiasts who collect original Mustangs) have located the Fulton bike and are considering restoring it to compete in the next land speed record event.
