The School’s Cool kindergarten readiness and preschool education program has returned from the NAEYC conference with high praise from professional attending their workshop entitled “Systematic child assessment: using outcome-based activities in a play based environment to measure progress and optimize child success.”   This professional development workshop addressed an outcome based curriculum which focuses on identifying and building on a child’s strengths and competencies in a play based environment.
Participants explored and discussed outcome-based programming, including examples of clear, measurable objectives that form the basis for assessing emerging child development.  Each participant practiced how to effectively observe and document the data of a hypothetical child using School’s Cool’s evaluation tool – the Developmental Checklist.  Participants were also introduced to strategies that support curriculum planning which responds to the individual strengths and needs of each child and how to provide a juncture for parent engagement and communication.
What did participants say?
Feedback from some participants included;
•   “School’s Cool has shifted my thinking about what to look for with regards to children’s strengths, and how to continually celebrate what children can do as opposed to what they still have to learn.”
•   “I know see how outcomes focus instruction, helping to guide my teaching practice daily, based on each child’s areas of interest and needs.  It will help me to plan for the next steps of each child, through a strength based approach.”
•   “The data derived from the outcomes and evaluation tool can be used to have more professional and meaningful communication with parents.”
School’s Cool looks forward to attending next years NAEYC conference where they will be sure to bring further thought provoking information regarding building resiliency and school readiness to all children across North America.
