Nov. 23, 2010 - PRLog -- "What kind of guitar do you have in there?"
People ask that question all the time. The shoulder bag sure looks like it might be for a musical instrument. It's a tapered shoulder bag that hold equipment up to 5 feet long. It's studded with big, practical pockets, and it even has an ingenious locking system that allows the user to adjust the length of the bag. It's in use by all kinds of people: martial artists, fishermen, photographers, kayakers, and fencers, maybe even guitarists. But especially fencers.

"The design of the Rapier Bag," says the company's owner, Jeff Sauber, "came to me gradually, after years of stuffing my rapiers into an undersized bag and dragging them through airports and the crowded subways of New York City. It was sort of my dream bag."

Yes, he said 'rapiers.' Sauber is a long-time fencing enthusiast, and competed in modern Olympic-style fencing for many years. At the same time, he always had a fascination for historical weapons and was lucky enough to find like-minded fencers to train with. The only trouble was carrying the equipment around. The old-fashioned rapier is much longer than it‘s modern cousins, the foil, epee and saber, often up to 10 inches longer, and no one was making carrying bags to fit them. Some rapier fencers made due by cutting holes in the tops of the bags they had, others wrapped the swords in bed sheets to carry them to the gym.

"One day I was talking about my dream bag to a friend of mine, Pedro Hernandez." Sauber explains, "Hernandez also happens to be an expert designers of sports bags in New York City. 10 minutes later, he became my design partner!"

The result is a dream bag for anyone who has to carry long, heavy, otherwise awkward, equipment. The bag itself is 5 FEET tall and adjustable for shorter items. It's got a durable, water-resistant body, Reinforced vinyl bottom, roomy outer pockets to hold sweaty t-shirts and protective equipment, and it's big enough inside to hold a LOT of gear. "You can easily put 30 pounds of stuff in there,“ says Sauber, "probably more, but I don’t recommend it. The bag will be fine, but it’s bad for your shoulder!” (To see all the features and more visit: http://www.cavalierattitude.com/Bag%20Specs.htm).

And with Hernandez’ expertise in his field, they were able to have them manufactured without the slightest compromise in quality, while still keeping the price competitively low. The bag has been a huge hit with classical fencers, but is also gaining in popularity with martial artists, and other sportsmen who have unusually long items to carry. Even non-sportsmen use them. Photographers use the bag for lighting equipment. One man bought one to carry a collapsible kayak through the jungle.

“I love my customers,” Sauber explains  “I get a lot of great feedback--you can see some of it on the testimonials page of our website. We’ve sold hundreds and only had two returns. Seems a woman bought them for her kids that were starting fencing, but the bags were bigger than the kids were! We were happy to take them back and refund her money.”

The Rapier bag is available through the company’s website http://www.cavalierattitude.com, as well as through selected fencing suppliers. It retails for $69.95 and is available in 3 colors.
