Nov. 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Cloud computing is gaining traction and is here for the long haul. With any great service, it brings great risks. Its important that you learn what risks are involved when considering whether or not cloud computing is right or not for your business.

It should come as no surprise that cloud computing providers are prime targets for cyber criminals. After all, the cloud holds sensitive data that is worth billions of dollars which makes the cloud computing provider vulnerable.

Most big cloud computing providers have the capacity and infrastructure to survive an attack.

However, you will want to make sure that the cloud computing provider you may be considering can protect your business data from cyber criminals that are trying to break into the cloud. Its very important to find out how they would handle a data security breach – if the cloud that holds your business data gets broken into.

There are several things (not limited to) that you will want to ask the cloud computing provider you are considering.

You will want to find out:

- Where the data is kept and inquire as to the details of data protection laws in the relevant jurisdictions.
- Which third parties the company deals with and whether they are able to access your data.
- Whether the cloud provider will accommodate your own security policies.
- Find out the cloud providers policies around passwords – how are they protected, created and changed?
- Is your data segregated in its own cloud?
- What happens to your data in the event of a disaster?
- Do they have the capability to do a complete restoration and if so, how long will it take?
- If you decide to change vendors, do you have the capability to export your data to a new service provider?

Be sure to ask for a copy of the cloud computing provider’s disclosure of privacy notices and business practices!  It may even be worth considering getting a security assessment from a neutral third party before committing to a cloud vendor.

You will want to avoid vendors that refuse to provide detailed information on security programs.

A business is ultimately responsible for the security and integrity of their own data, even when it is held by a service provider. Make sure to ask the cloud computing provider the tough questions mentioned above so that you can rest assured that your business data will be held in a cloud that has no leaks and if a leak were to happen, you will know how it will be fixed and protected!

Data security breaches are expensive propositions for those who neglect to implement and maintain a solid security practice for their virtual environments. Businesses that are not prepared in the event of a data security breach can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars if sensitive data is leaked from their cloud.

Fortunately, there is insurance for this type of risk. It is called “Information Privacy & Security Insurance.” Information Security and Privacy Insurance offers multi-faceted protection for both the expenses and the legal liabilities associated with data security privacy breaches.
