Taliban Banned Music in Afghanistan Gaining Popularity

Nov. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- Pastho songs and music was banned under the Taliban rule but now during the regime of Hamid Karzai things have been looking better. The country as if it is witnessing a resurge in music. Pashto music can now be heard in almost every nook and corner of the besieged nation.

In addition, the neighbouring country too faces the Taliban menace, the Swat valley in particular. Recent floods combined with the insurgence left the valley in turmoil. This hit the music industry hard. However this has improved in recent weeks, music sales have improved. The valley once famous of its hard core fundamentalists, kidnapping is slowly changing. Since the fundamentalists drove away the Pashto singers, dancers and performers, looted music shops, burned down dance studios and entertainment shops, it seems to be improving although it cannot be said that it is completely free of fundamentalists. The military was responsible for removing and driving large sections of the insurgents underground.

Today many Pakistani film makers are coming to Afghanistan to engage Pashto performers and artists for TV serials and movies. Although they do face the threat from the Talban and death threats from fundamentalists, they have actually brushing aside the treat and diving in to produce Pashto songs and music. A Marathi singer from Mumbai is too making a name for herself in Afghanistan by singing Afghani songs. Sharon Osser from Mumbai cannot speak Pashto fluently but says that the Marathi language is somewhat similar to Pashto and has helped her to sing songs in the Afghani language.
