Heaven Sent Crib Mattress: Designed to fight against SIDS by Elizabeth MacFarland

Nov. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- t's known as the Heaven Sent Crib Mattress, created by Detroit company, Secure Beginnings.

"It fits in just like any conventional mattress," Kelly Obriot said, founder and creator of the company.

It's a "breathable" mattress designed to fight back against the leading cause of death among children between one month and one year of age, sudden infant death syndrome, better known as SIDS.

Dr. George Zureikat, Critical Care Pediatrician says SIDS is a nightmare that can strike without warning to a completely health baby while they're asleep.

"Carbon dioxide in this room is very,very low," Dr. Zureikat said. "If baby is face down on a mattress then they tend to rebreathe carbon dioxide and for some babies, that may be harmful."

Heaven Sent creators say their new sleep surface address that concern.

Julie Andreae, Vice President at Secure Beginnings says, "the air enters and exits through the decorative openings on the sides and then travels up and down through the sleep surface... so if baby is laying face down, they can breathe right through the mattress.

Studies have shown heavy clothing, blankets and a warm room temperature also increases the risk of SIDS. The Heaven Sent Crib Mattress however is designed to keep baby's body core temperature stable.

And crib bumper pads have recently been suggested by the American Academy of Pediatrics to be removed from cribs. In some cases, crib bumper pads have caused infant deaths due to strangulation or suffocation. Heavensent creators however say their crib bumper is large enough to prevent entanglement and a tight fit to prevent baby from becoming trapped.

"I think it's a clever idea to come up with a mattress like that," Dr. Zureikat said. "I think the idea is appealing, but it still needs to be tested."
