Wally Edgar Chevrolet --The CHEVY VOLT Awards- How The "WOMEN" Behind The Volt Have Gone all out

WALL STREET & the press continue to pour awards on the CHEVROLET VOLT and yet somebody's "MOM" helped stretch the envelope in developing the most talked about auto product ever.

Nov. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- LAKE ORION MI. Years of development have gone into  the CHEVY VOLT to make it the benchmark Automobile that all other's will now play catch up for years to come in hopes of becoming somewhat of a contender. Behind these technologies a surprising number of women have been at the forefront in the VOLT's evolution.

We have stories of a few of them and knowing that this will leave out many more, we apoligize in advance.

**   BRITTA GROSS, who directs “infrastructure commercialization” for GM, is in charge of making sure there will be home and work charging for the Volt. Gross predicted that 40 percent of VOLT charging will be on 110-volt house current, which seems like a lot to me. I’ve been assuming that most people will spend for the 220-volt chargers that can have you up and running in two to three hours, versus eight to 10 hours for house current.“Women pursue their passions a lot,” Gross  said. “They’re migrating to both the advanced technology and the clean technology sectors.” Gross herself started out in aerospace 25 years ago, and she says there were a lot of women making planes even then. It took longer in the male “car guy” fiefdom of auto manufacturing.

** PAMELA FLETCHER is the chief engineer for the VOLT and the company’s separate plug-in hybrid. Fletcher, who has a master’s degree in combustion engineering, says, “It’s all about having the right experience and being there at the right time.” She said she has never felt constrained by her sex at GM. “I’ve always loved cars, and it’s the ultimate consumer market. I’m excited about pursuing a career in the automotive business.”
Fletcher said she has “quite a few young ladies” reporting to her. “They have real environmental concerns,” she said. One way women knock on the door is through college-based projects like EcoCar, a GM-sponsored contest (with funding from the Department of Energy) to build the greenest car.In addition to the VOLT, Fletcher  has charge of the plug-in hybrid program that was orphaned when Saturn died.

**  TERRI QUIGLEY is the plant manager of the Detroit-Hamtramck (DHAM) plant where the CHEVROLET VOLT is being built.
GM will initially produce 10,000 Volts in 2011,and recently increased by 5000 or so, and 30,000 plus in 2012.  There will be seven initial launch markets, but soon after the car goes national. “That’s the part of the story nobody picks up on the VOLT will be national in just 12 to 18 months.”

**  CHRISTI LANDY is the product marketing manager for CHEVROLET's new electric VOLT, due to hit the streets by December.
Landy has been part of VOLT development since its inception in 2006. It's a high-priority effort at GM.
Landy is always moving fast, juggling her round-the-clock workload at GM with raising her twin boys.
After graduating, she immediately headed to GM, following in the footsteps of her father, who worked there for 38 years in sales.
By 2002 she had become a marketing manager for Chevrolet and in the spring of 2006 was approached to help develop the CHEVY VOLT concept car. And the VOLT project was different from most. "There was such a strong push. From the get go, it was clear this was a priority" for GM.
She expects the pace to settle down once the VOLT launch is complete.  She says the company has already held meetings on the next generation VOLT, and she'd welcome the chance to be part of that, or another new, environmentally friendly technology, where she can be at the forefront.  Whatever she does, she clearly loves intensity. She credits her type-A personality with helping her manage the work/home life juggle. "I have a lot of stamina," she says. "I can stay up until midnight and wake up early."

With this intensity and passion, the "Women" behind the VOLT, are certainly why GENERAL MOTORS has the Game Changer that the VOLT has evolved into.
