Nov. 18, 2010 - PRLog -- The Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society (POS) recently inducted its 55th president at the Society’s annual fall meeting in State College.  Harry Schmaltz, MD, a West Pittston native, takes the reins from Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, MD who is also a Northeast PA native, having grown up in Jessup.

“I look forward to continuing the legacy of POS past and present leaders by advancing the Society’s mission of promoting excellence in orthopaedic medicine through quality educational programs and being a strong patient and physician advocate in state government,” said Dr. Schmaltz, an orthopaedic surgeon at Scranton Orthopaedic Specialists PC.  “We achieve this through the generous volunteer work of our members who help raise public awareness of bone, joint and muscle health and who continue to provide excellent patient care and strive for greater patient access to orthopaedic services.”

Dr. Schmaltz, during his induction, said keeping orthopaedic medical services accessible to patients in the most convenient, high-quality and cost-effective manner continues to be the focus of the Society.  POS also educates lawmakers and others about the need for improving Pennsylvania’s medical liability environment and insurance reimbursement policies in order to strengthen orthopaedic care in the Commonwealth.

“We have a huge challenge facing us as we see many changes in health care delivery. Our growing population is in need of more orthopaedic services at the same time many of our doctors are retiring and fewer orthopaedic residents are choosing Pennsylvania as a place to practice medicine,” Dr. Schmaltz noted.  “That’s why it’s important for orthopaedic doctors to increase efficiency in all aspects of their practice and I intend to make this the focus of our educational programs this year.”

In addition to his position with POS, Dr. Schmaltz is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and he is a member of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association and the American Association of Hip and Knee surgeons.  Dr. Schmaltz also serves as the Director of NewSteps, the Joint Replacement Program at Community Medical Center in Scranton.

After graduating from Bucknell University, Dr. Schmaltz received his medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine and completed his Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Geisinger Medical Center.   Dr. Schmaltz is an attending orthopaedic surgeon at Community Medical Center, Moses Taylor Hospital, and Northeast Surgery Center, and on the consulting staffs of several other area hospitals.

POS is a professional medical specialty organization representing more than 1000(?) orthopaedic surgeons across Pennsylvania in advocating for excellence in the practice of orthopaedic medicine.  For more information on the importance of bone, joint and muscle health at every age, visit the POS website at www.paorthosociety.org.
