America's Got Talent New York Auditions - Black Diamonds Kid Band Tell Their Story

Nov. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- DeAngelis Studio of Music, Haverhill, MA:  Black Diamonds, a Haverhill, MA kid band, aged 9-12 took the trip to New York this November to experience what America's Got Talent auditions are really like.  

DeAngelis Studio of Music co-owner, Nancy, got up really early on Sunday, November 14th to try to get a good spot in line at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.  Even getting there at 7:15am, Nancy found herself walking several blocks and around a corner to get into an already extremely long line.  AGT staff were giving out wristbands to performers and non-performers, the non-performers receiving a different color.  What is great is that they let you hold a spot in line even if not all your band members are there yet.

The line moved surprisingly quickly and soon they were handing out audition numbers, Black Diamonds' number ended in "407".  Number 407, not too bad, just goes to show how many people in the lines are actually just family or friends of the contestants.  At this point it must have been around 7:30am and they moved people fairly quickly onto a lot area of the convention center.  At this point people were lined up in rows and it was looking pretty crowded.  Then the singer, AJ and guitar player, Henry, arrived and found Nancy in the line, kind of in the middle of the group, at this point it was around 7:50am.  Then they started to call out number ranges and were moving groups inside the building fairly quickly - yikes drummer, Nick and bass player Wolfgang had not yet arrived!  Finally just as they called the next group to move inside they arrived - that was close!

The next step was going through a security check and then you had to line up to check-in with an AGT Staff member who would go over your paperwork.  The young lady who checked Black Diamonds in was "super-nice"!  

After checking-in you had to wait in a waiting area, we must have waited there a few hours.  This room had a snack bar where you could by snacks, drinks or some lunch items - not cheap and long lines, but great that it was there.

Next they called numbers in groups of 50 and you were moved to a "holding tank" as they called it, just another smaller room.  There they had a camera crew, were filming some of the acts and the crowds as well as a visit from Nick Cannon, the AGT host.  We were in there for about another hour.

Next only the performers and one adult, in this case Mike, Owner of DeAngelis Studio, were allowed to move to a hallway where they would await their audition.  They waited about 1 hour for their turn.  Bands are not permitted to perform if they have to set-up equipment, so they are to bring a DVD of a 90sec performance - they were called in, a few questions were asked by the 2 producers who were there, while they filmed.  Black Diamonds were told to leave the room while they reviewed their DVD.  Then they were called back in and after a few more questions they were done.  They were told they would hear in March if they will be invited for a second audition.

And that's it.  We left by about 1:00pm and all in all it was a great experience.  Lots of waiting but very comfortable and great staff.  Thank you AGT!!!
