Nov. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- TEMPERATURES have dipped over the weekend and Swansea will be getting a whole lot icier over the next few days.

Preparations have now begun for putting Waterfront Winterland's ice rinks in place- a process that will see about 180,000 litres of water frozen.

Both the main Admiral ice rink and Rocky's rink for children have now arrived after being shipped in from Belgium and Swansea Council Special Events officers are busy putting them in place.

The temperature of the ice varies from minus four degrees to minus 12 degrees. Over 400 pairs of new ice skating boots have been ordered and the rinks will allow over 200 people to skate at the same time.

Over 10,000 metres of energy-saving aluminium pipes will be in place below the main rink.

Ice-skating is just one of many fun features forming part of this year's Waterfront Winterland attraction that returns to the grounds of the National Waterfront Museum from this weekend until January 9.

Other features include the 44-metre tall Miles Hire giant wheel and a family funfair with rides such as the Snow Storm, a traditional carousel and the Mad Mouse- a mini rollercoaster adventure for young children.

Visitors can also pop into Santa's Grotto and enjoy live music and festive food.

Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: "The ice rinks have become a popular feature of Christmas in Swansea and offer people of all ages the chance to take to the ice and enjoy a particularly festive activity.

"It takes six people about two days to set up the ice rinks and excitement is now really starting to build towards the official opening of Waterfront Winterland this weekend.

"Preparations for the attraction's return are now at an advanced stage and it won't be long before the combination of festive activities there are once again putting people in the Christmas mood."
