Nov. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Manipal, November 15: As with each new academic session, Manipal University will begin the 2011-12 session also with a lot more for students seeking admission to the university. New courses have been added and freeships enhanced for the new session, for which, the admission process begins today.

Student interest is always a priority in the University.  Be it in classrooms or outside it, the students are encouraged in the development of intellectual and personal skills appropriate for leading and serving in a global society.

Every year Manipal University adds new courses so that students seeking admission have a variety of subjects in higher education to choose from. The university prides itself from the depth of the courses it offers and in the new academic session, the students will have 286 courses to pick and choose.

Some of the new courses beginning in the new academic session are: M.Phil Regenerative Medicine, Advanced PG Diploma in Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, BA Culinary Arts, MS –Dual Degree – Lancaster University, UK and MS – Dual Degree – Staffordshire University, UK.

Freeships and scholarships are initiatives by the University to encourage talented students to take admission and continue to maintain that cutting edge for as long as they are here.  The university has been raising the quantum of freeship and scholarship every year.

Accordingly, for the academic session 2011-12, the freeships and scholarships will be 16. 29 crores. It was 12.23 crores last year.  A total of 197 students benefited during the 2010 admissions.  The break-up was: 15 for medicine, 8 for dental, 2 for B pharm, 45 for BE and 127 BE AICTE.

Candidates admitted to MBBS, BDS, BE and B Pharm are offered these freeships. A merit list is drawn from the first 500 rank in case of MBBS and first 1000 in case of BDS, B Pharm and BE. Freeship covers only the course fee payable for the particular course. The award of freeship for the subsequent years will be based on the performance of the candidate in the university examinations.

AICTE scholarships mean a waiver on tuition fees for economically backward, meritorious students to bachelor’s programmes in engineering, pharmacy and hotel management. The scheme is only for those students whose parents’ annual income is less than rupees 2.5 lakhs.

The university also gives several other scholarships like; the Academy of General Education (AGE) scholarships, which entails a 10 per cent waiver on tuition fee for students of schools run by AGE joining courses at MU, Scholarships for Konkani speaking students. However, both these scholarships will have a 25 per cent waiver in case Allied Health Sciences and Nursing courses.

The University admissions process for all courses, under graduate and postgraduate, begins today. Prospectus and forms are available at 200 selected State Bank of India branches and 200 branches of Syndicate Bank across the country.
Candidates can also visit www.manipal.edu and download the digital prospectus and application or apply online by paying the application fees through Credit Card or Net Banking or Demand Draft.

The University conducts an online entrance test at 28 centres across the country. This year, a centre has been started in Port Blair also.
