Nov. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Niles, Ohio, … The Mass Oxygen Distribution System, or MODS, took “road-side assist” to a whole new level of sophistication at the capital city recently! Penn Care, Inc., in conjunction with the Arlington County Fire Department, set up a MODS unit near an emergency medical services tent and provided oxygen for runners during the 26th Annual Army Ten-Miler in Virginia.

30,000 runners participated in this year’s event, which happens to be the third largest race in the world. The course ran through the nation’s capital in Washington DC and had several hundred spectators cheering the runners throughout. Penn Care Sales Manager Taylor Pease worked with the fire department personnel and helped supply oxygen to injured runners and spectators with the Mass Oxygen Distribution System.

Shawn Bryant, president, Penn Care Inc. says, “The Army Ten-Miler was a great opportunity for Penn Care to support the United States Army’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Fund. It also gave us a chance to demonstrate the revolutionary portable oxygen system and its usefulness in a mass casualty incident. Because the MODS is a cost-effective and space-conscious way to deliver oxygen to multiple patients in the event of a crisis, it was the ideal EMS solution for the Army Ten-Miler race.”

It took only 15 minutes for Taylor Pease from Penn Care and two crew members from the fire department to unload the MODS unit from its trailer and set up the treatment area. With the MODS unit stationed outside of the treatment tent, a main supply hose ran under the tent to two patient distribution kits. Army doctors and medical staff manning the station were impressed with the ease and efficiency of the system that enabled them to supply oxygen for up to twenty patients simultaneously.

The MODS is a large-volume oxygen distribution system that is easily transported using a trailer. This new generation of technology can provide an adequate oxygen supply to a large-scale incident with multi-patient situations. The MODS provides over 64,000 gaseous liters of oxygen (stored as only 75-liters of LOX) to multiple patients in a mass casualty situation. The oxygen capacity of just one MODS unit is equivalent to 12 large high-pressure H cylinders. A 75-Liter Liquid Oxygen (LOX) distribution system provides an incredible 450 LPM of gaseous oxygen flow for patients during a mass casualty incident.

Furthermore, LOX costs less than Gaseous Oxygen and uses ALL of the oxygen volume, whereas Gaseous Oxygen cylinders only utilize 80% of their volume. In a mass casualty incident, the MODS proves to be an invaluable life saving technology from a disaster preparedness and disaster relief standpoint. Shawn Bryant concludes, “At Penn Care, we always look for ways to make the job easier and more efficient for our customers in the emergency medical services and disaster response community. The Mass Oxygen Distribution System, or MODS, is truly revolutionizing the way that organizations and communities prepare for disaster. We are happy to be able to offer this product to our customers across the nation.”
