Nov. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- MyGuru LLC –www.myguruedge.com - a provider of customized, 1-1 private tutoring for high school, college, and graduate school students in the Chicago area and its suburbs, is enjoying steady growth as it finishes up its tenth full month of operations.  As competition for entrance into top colleges and graduate schools continues to increase, students are seeking an affordable yet effective way to ensure they perform at their best.  MyGuru is an alternative to traditional, high cost tutoring and test prep options, such as Kaplan or the Princeton Review.

MyGuru LLC is a provider of customized, 1-1 and small group tutoring and test preparation services to students in Chicago and all of its suburbs, from Highland Park to Arlington Heights to Naperville.  MyGuru was founded by graduate school students from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.  Tutoring sessions occur in local libraries, coffee shops, or in student’s homes – MyGuru doesn’t have a physical location.

MyGuru seeks to occupy a niche between high priced tutoring and test prep companies like Kaplan or the Princeton Review and “tutor matching” services like Craig’s List or www.universitytutor.com  National tutoring and test preparation companies tend to offer either one-size-fits-all test prep classes or high priced 1-1 tutoring options.

These test prep classes sometimes end up providing little additional information above what is found in traditional test prep books. But, 1-1 tutoring from these companies, regardless of whether it covers an academic subject or test prep, can cost between $100 and $250 per hour.  Of course, tutors at these companies are generally well qualified, professional, and responsive.

As an alternative to large test prep companies, MyGuru’s founders noticed that a large number of web-sites have sprung up that function as “markets” for individual tutors to find interested students.  Example web-sites include Craig’s List, and a number of tutoring specific web-sites that function similarly - any tutor can post a profile, and students can literally search for hundreds of potential tutors in their area.

MyGuru’s founders noticed, however, that prices varied widely across tutors on these sites, and students had no guarantee the tutor would properly understand the content, show up on time, communicate well, etc.  They also noticed that tutors, who tend to simply enjoy tutoring, were forced to negotiate prices, scheduling, etc. with students when using these sites, instead of simply showing up and providing tutoring services (as they would if they worked for a company like Kaplan).

MyGuru represents a unique middle ground between these two existing options.  It only recruits very well qualified tutors with > 2 years of tutoring experience and degrees from the nation’s top education institutions (MyGuru would argue it has the best tutors in the Chicago area, for example, based on years of experience, educational background, etc.).
MyGuru also checks for interpersonal skills and monitors feedback for each tutor over time.

MyGuru has helped over 75 students and generated almost $20,000 in revenue.  Student contact MyGuru via phone, the web-site, or email, and are usually matched with an appropriate tutor within 24 hours.

Students seem to like what MyGuru has to offer.  “It has been such a good experience working with you….Gideon has worked out really well.  Jay has been getting A’s.  Not bad for Organic Chemistry” says the parent of an organic chemistry student.

“At MyGuru, we believe that customized, 1-1 tutoring can turn a “C” into a “B” or a “B” into an “A.”  But, because it’s an investment, we know students want to feel comfortable with their tutoring provider’s ability, punctuality, and communication skills.  We strive to provide the best combination of content knowledge, price, and interpersonal skills.  We know students can find cheaper individual tutors or experts from Kaplan who have scored in the top 0.1% of all test takers – but we think we offer tutors with the best combination of these attributes” says Jon Lock, one of MyGuru’s founders.

MyGuru is also currently experimenting with moving beyond in person tutoring to providing tools and services in the online tutoring space.  One example is a recent partnership with ePrep – which provides self-paced video-based and online prep for the ACT – visit http://www.eprep.com/partner/MyGuru to learn more.
