Beware of companies offering HAZWOPER training

Why many companies offering OSHA required HAZWOPER training should be scrutinized carefully, and should be asked pertinent questions before you decide to use their services. Many of these companies are doing it wrong, and YOU will pay the price!

Nov. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- I have been dealing with the HAZWOPER regulation since 1984 when I worked as a hazardous material handler for a major company.  Since then I have worked on many hazardous waste sites with those who supposedly have been trained in the same areas as I was, and have been injured, and almost killed, by these same people.  I knew there had to be a better way, which is why I started Gorham Safety.  I realized that many of the people who have a HAZWOPER certificate had training that was not worth the paper their certification was printed on.

HAZWOPER is an OSHA required training program for people involved in 5 specific job environments (see 29 CFR 1910.120 (a) and (b)).  The first 3 groups can be lumped into one category; those involved in tasks preformed at uncontrolled and/or uncharacterized waste sites.  The fourth group are those who work at Treatment, Storage, or disposal Facilities (TSDF).  And the final group is for those who are involved in emergency response operations irregardless of the location.

The first 3 groups are required to have one of two types of training:
40-hours for site workers
24-hours for those who are onsite for a limited task for a limited amount of time and are unlikely to be exposed at, or above, exposure limits set by OSHA.
Supervisors need an additional 8 hours of training.

NOTE!: There may be other training elements beyond HAZWOPER (such as confined space entry) that  have their own training requirements.

People involved in work at TSDF's are required to have 24-hours of training that covers the elements set forth in 29 CFR 1910.120 (p).  THIS IS NOT THE SAME 24-HOUR TRAINING MENTIONED ABOVE!

Members of emergency response teams (not associated with any of the other four groups) have to have the training set forth in 29 CFR 1910.120 (q).  Depending on the level of training, there is a different hourly requirement for each level.

Now, for those of you who have searched online for HAZWOPER training companies, you may have noticed that most offer the 40-hour training as if it is a blanket covering all the different scenarios, and situations, found in general industry.  THIS CANNOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH!

I ONLY offer the training required for TSD Facilities.  See my website, and the following link on the OSHA website for more information, as well as questions to ask any prospective company you are considering using for your HAZWOPER training.
