Nov. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- GatewayGourmet.com is adding a new section to its site: student interviews. The goal of these interviews is to provide prospective culinary students with the information necessary to find the right school for them and walk into class ready for success. GatewayGourmet’s first interviewee is Ken, also known as blogger “tinfoilduck.” Ken grew up in Hawaii, moved to the states for some time and is now back in Maui working in real estate while attending culinary school at The Maui Culinary Academy.

Even with several professions under his belt including waiter, dancer and realtor, Ken always knew he liked to cook. He grew up in a household of home cooks and seldom went out to dinner. Even now, Ken favors cooking at home to dining out, saying that it helps him avoid spending money that is unnecessary.  After witnessing chefs prepare dinners during his waiting job, Ken picked up valuable culinary skills that are proving helpful in his classes now.

Now the oldest student in his culinary classes, Ken is determined to take as much as he can out of culinary school. An excellent multitasker, Ken has to balance work, school, exercise and other activities into his schedule, so slacking off is not an option.

When asked what advice he has for high school students thinking about a career in the culinary industry Ken said: “Be serious about it. I am 51 years old so I’m the oldest by far. Most of the students are 17-18 years old. Attendance is spotty; they don’t do their homework. They are not serious about learning. It’s not easy. You’ll be doing a lot of sweeping, scrubbing and mopping. Expand your horizons. Sample everything that is given to you.”
