L’Oréal Paris Honors Missouri resident & St Bonaventure student Simone Bernstein National Honoree

Nov. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- After volunteering with a local non-profit, Simone Bernstein became aware of the vast number of volunteer opportunities available to teenagers, but she also recognized that most teens had no idea the opportunities existed.  So, despite having no web design experience, Simone set out to acquire the skills she needed to build stlouisvolunteen.com, a comprehensive website that connects teens with organizations looking for volunteers. Using social networking sites like Twitter, Simone also posts short-term and temporary volunteer assignments.

For safety, security and/or liability reasons, many non-profits were unable to open their doors to volunteers ages 12-17 without a guardian on site. Simone worked with agencies to find ways to safely include youth volunteers, and met with area religious leaders, school principals, non-profit organizations and directors of museums to find ways to include eager volunteers under 18.

Now a freshman at St. Bonaventure University, Simone has helped over 1,500 students find volunteer opportunities at www.stlouisvolunteen.com, and convinced more than 45 organizations to consider youth under 18 as volunteers. And Simone’s leadership in organizing the First St. Louis Youth and Family Volunteer Fair brought over 25 organizations and 500 interested participants to the Magic House St. Louis Children's Museum.
