A diet rich in vegetables and fruits is highly beneficial to health and fitness: eating more fruit and vegetables can lead to lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer.  Advice from the World Health Organisation recommends eating a minimum of 400g, or 5 standard portions of fruit and vegetables a day to promote good health and prevent disease.

However, evidence from many countries and regions shows that both adults and children are failing to eat enough fruits and vegetables, with real impacts on health and fitness. Many people forget to eat enough fruit and veg, or simply don’t realise that they aren’t eating enough. As a result, almost 1/3 of Americans are obese, and obesity has almost tripled in Europe since the 1980s. Cancer, heart disease, stroke and a range of other serious health problems are all on the increase worldwide. Eating a balanced diet with more fruit and vegetables can help to address these problems. Overall, the WHO estimates that up to 2.7 million lives could potentially be saved each year if fruit and vegetable consumption were sufficiently increased.

How Apple is Helping
Health and Fitness apps for the iPhone and iPad are becoming increasingly popular, and users are prepared to pay a premium for those that offer real benefits. Almost all games on Apple's Appstore are price at $0.99, yet almost all charting health related apps fetch more than twice this. The latest app to be gobbled up by consumers is Munch 5-a-Day, which allows users to record and track their fruit and vegetable intake, challenge themselves to eat more fruit and veg, and improve their diet. In a bid to improve the diets of it's users, Apple has featured the app on the Appstore homepage and in the Health & Fitness category, which has helped it reach the top of the paid charts in only a few days.

In Munch 5-a-Day, fruit and veg consumption can be recorded by simply tapping fruit and veg icons on the app’s home screen each time the user eats a portion of fruit or veg. Each ‘munch’ is recorded in the goal bar on the home screen, showing the user’s progress over that day.  The remaining munches needed to meet the daily target are also displayed on the app icon on the springboard. Tilting the device reveals graphs, achievement badges and social network sharing.

Unlike the many calorie counting apps on the store, Munch 5-a-Day makes it as quick and simple as possible to record your good deeds for the day - open, munch and close, all in 3 seconds! Apple have always been keen to broaden the appeal of their mobile devices as much as possible by not placing too much focus on games, and featuring apps such as Munch 5-a-Day is in keeping with this goal. Everyone knows an Apple a day keeps the doctor away, but Apple would rather you Munch 5-a-Day to stay at your best!
