Nov. 6, 2010 - PRLog -- Fear of Flying Hypnosis Offers Hope To Fearful Flyers

A Cardiff-based hypnotist has created a unique resource site for nervous flyers.

Says Richard Haggerty of www.FearofFlyingHypnosis.com, "Over the past few days, any nervous flyer couldn't help but feel even more anxious. The safest airline in the world, Quantas, has had to ground two airplanes after an engine exploded. I have noticed a rapid increase in hypnotherapy enquiries from passengers who are petrified of boarding a plane."

Specialising in working with clients with a fear of flying phobia, Richard says he is noticing more clients each year.

Richard explains, “Since 9/11, the fear of terrorism has only intensified the flying fear that some people experience.

“The reality is that flying on commercial airliners is still one of the safest ways to travel. Unfortunately, when an airline like Quantas has to do two emergency landings on consecutive days, it makes nervous flyers feel even worse.

"Fear of flying is mainly a matter of perception," according to hypnosis expert Richard. "Nervous flyers would not notice that both times the Quantas airplanes managed to land safely."

Richard uses the power of hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to relax clients’ minds, so they can shift their perception. He combines this with rigorous up-to-date information that explains to clients just how safe flying really is.

For instance:

•   All commercial airplanes have “redundant systems”, so they can keep flying even in emergencies. If one engine gives out, a plane can still land safely
•   The safety of all airplanes was increased after 9/11 to include bullet-proof doors to the cock-pit, plus a camera so the pilot can see who is trying to get in
•   Pilot training is rigorous with constant re-assessment to ensure they are completely fit and up-to-date with the latest procedures

Richard says 2010 has lead to a surge of new nervous passengers, "2010 has been a terrible year for fearful flyers. We had the ash cloud, then we had the bomb worry aboard the cargo flight from Yemen. Now we've had two Quantas airplanes with sturdy Rolls-Royce engines forced to do emergency landings. These events have only worsened the fear that some people have."

Here's Richard's top tips for overcoming a fear of flying:

•   Learn to take deep breaths, in through your nose and exhale out your mouth
•   Make the out breath about twice as long as the in breath
•   Challenge habitual thinking patterns by asking, “Am I frightened of something that is immediate or real, or is it in my mind?”
•   Learn self-hypnosis, which has been proven to bring down blood pressure and relax you
•   Get enrolled on a program, or course where you can isolate what is causing your fear
•   Get help as soon as you can to avoid the fear getting any worse
•   Find out as many facts about the safety of flying as you can

Richard says, "Fear of flying is actually a misnomer. It is a series of several fears. For instance some folk fear being out of control. Others are claustrophobic. There are also folks with acrophobia (the fear of heights). In my private clinical practice we find out the specific fear that is actually at the root of the problem, so we can clear it."

Says recent client Rob Evans from Cardiff, "After completing your 'Flying Without Fear' course I recently flew to Barcelona with a totally different mind set. At no time during the flight there or back did I feel any panic or apprehension. In fact I enjoyed both flights immensely - even when we had bad turbulence during landing. So thanks again for turning something that was becoming a severe problem into a real pleasure!"
