Video Game Feature: Microsoft launches Kinect

Nov. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- Microsoft’s Kinect has been launched today. As with any major releases in the video game world, we think it’s only proper that we do a feature before this new peripheral hits store shelves.

What is Kinect?
Initially called Project Natal before Microsoft formally announced its official name, Kinect is a new Xbox 360 controller that lets users become the controller.  To put it more clearly, it acts as a sensor that will translate the user’s body movements as command inputs for games. Wiggle your right arm in a certain way, and your video game counterpart will do the same, and all that jazz.

Fun for the Whole Family
Judging from the list of family-friendly titles for the new peripheral, the Kinect is aimed more towards entry-level gamers, much like how Wii is marketed for everyone, including your parents, aunts, uncles, and even grandparents. It’s only fitting that Kinect will be released just weeks before the holiday season.  Having a video game that everyone can join in on is a great way to get the family in the living room.  Maybe your dad and your Uncle Bob will finally settle their differences after a round of Kinect Sports, or maybe you can take the pressure off your mom as you try to keep everyone’s appetite and patience distracted by playing Sonic Free Riders.  

In any case, Kinect does have a new and unique approach when it comes to gaming. It’s certainly the first time we’ll get to use just our limbs to control a game, and the health and social benefits attached to it doesn’t hurt a bit.
