Originally intended to target western outdoorsmen, it was soon realized the site would be most effective compassing a broader geographic area. It was quickly decided to change the focus to all of North America instead of just the western U.S. While a name and domain change is under consideration, it is not yet known how much of a difference, if any, such a change will make to the overall marketing strategy and viability of the site.
The West Outdoors offers a full litany of social networking services such as an activity stream much like the Facebook “wall” and photo galleries, but it also offers some services the big name, and even some of the small ones do not. Members can create groups based on their interests, business or organization which include fully functional forums. These groups can be created as public, private and even hidden to accommodate most anyone's preference. Members can also create real, full fledged blogs on the site. These are complete WordPress blogs, a capability not found in any other social network in this niche, or any of the large networks.
Management believes this site is well placed to offer something not yet available to this particular niche demographic. While hunters are well served here, people involved in other outdoor activities are not. In addition, the site is very well suited to businesses and conservation organizations leveraging the site via the groups functionality and available blog capabilities. In all, The West Outdoors offers a unique and useful set of capabilities for individual and business users, and with the advent of the upcoming facebook and twitter integration should be even more effective for everyone.
