Nov. 2, 2010 - PRLog -- Hospice at Home Celebrates Veterans Day on November 11

It surprises many Americans to learn that 25 percent of all deaths in the US are Veterans. That’s 1,800 people a day; more than 680,000 Veterans every year. These heroic Americans deserve recognition for their military service– particularly at the end of life’s journey. Hospice at Home honors our local Veterans through specialized care and services.

Michigan Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and many local hospices across the state in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are working together to help improve access to the care Veterans receive from hospice and palliative care providers.

“By recognizing the unique needs of our nation’s Veterans who are facing a life-limiting illness, our organization is better able to accompany and guide America’s Veterans and their families toward a more peaceful death,” states Richard Grom, Hospice at Home Community Relations Representative.  “New tools and resources from the Michigan Hospice Veterans Partnership and national initiatives such as the We Honor Veterans program from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization assist local hospices in providing the best care for our nation’s Veterans.”

As Americans prepare to honor our nation’s heroes on Veterans Day, November 11, and pay tribute to the men and women who have served our country, Hospice at Home is proud to honor Veterans with specialized care.

Hospice at Home is the non-profit community hospice focusing on the patient and family regardless of the patients' diagnosis, treatment choices, or ability to pay. It provides quality care to people adjusting to living with a serious illness, facing death, anticipating the death of a loved one, or healing their grief after the death of a loved one. Hospice at Home places an emphasis on the emotional, social, and spiritual needs of those whom need care and those receiving support services. Serving Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, and Allegan Counties, the care is coordinated by a team of physicians, nurses, home health aides, social workers, spiritual care counselors, bereavement coordinators, and trained volunteers. Extending this care, Lory’s Place, a bereavement and education center that builds hope and strength for every grieving family, is available to anyone in Southwest Michigan or Northern Indiana.
