Nov. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Replacing your conventional light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones will not only make your home more energy efficient, it will save you money on your electric bill as well.

“A lot of us start thinking about cutting the cost of our home energy consumption during the winter because of increased energy bills due to the furnace running, but there’s one simple course of action that anyone can take at anytime of year,” said Brian Paterson; vice president of New Buffalo Impact, a Tonawanda, NY based home energy improvement company.

“Making your home more energy efficient and reducing your electricity bill can be a simple as a twist of the wrist”, Paterson added.

Paterson explained that ENERGY STAR compact fluorescent bulbs, also know as CFL’s, use about a quarter of the energy compared to a conventional light bulb to produce an equivalent amount of light.  According to Paterson you can replace a larger watt conventional bulb with a smaller watt compact fluorescent one and that means less energy consumption.

Paterson said, “The lower wattage means a lower amount of energy used and there is a smaller amount of heat being generated. Another good thing is that the light from the compact fluorescent bulb are more diffused and light a larger area.”

“Getting started is easy. Replace the bulbs that are used the most in your home. That could include floor lamps and table lamps in family areas, lights in the kitchen, hall, or basement, and lights used outside at night.” said Paterson, “

Changing light bulbs is no small thing when it comes to saving energy according to www.energystar.gov.  The website points out that “if every American home replaced just one light with a light that’s earned the ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light three million homes for a year, save about $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent nine billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, the equivalent to those from about 800,000 cars.”

The website also states that an ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulb can savemore than $40 in electric costs over its lifetime while using 75% less energy than standard incandescent bulbs.”

Paterson added, “These bulbs also last up to ten times longer than conventional bulbs, and produce about 75% less heat.”

“There’s a whole list of low, or no, cost energy saving do it yourself tips, but changing your light bulbs is easy and efficient from the moment you do it,” he continued.

Paterson also recommends having a professional conduct a high tech comprehensive home energy audit to provide details on any additional energy saving measures a home owner should take to improve your home’s energy efficiency including insulation, doors, windows, air sealing, or energy efficient heating and cooling systems.

Paterson’s company, New Buffalo Impact, conducts a comprehensive WholeHouse Energy Audit and performs the necessary home energy improvement work as well.  NBI also works with home owners to identify, and use, various financial assistance programs.  More information on New Buffalo Impact is available online at www.newbuffaloimpact.com , or by e-mailing inquiry@newbuffaloimpact.com .
