Recently released market study: Hong Kong Tourism Report Q4 2010

New Consumer Goods research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

Oct. 30, 2010 - PRLog -- Hong Kong arrivals data for 2010 has remained robust until July (the most recent data available), with a total of 19,992,810 visitors over the first seven months of the year, an increase of 24.4% year on year (yo- y). July 2010 arrivals (of 3,136,794) were the highest-ever recorded for a single month in Hong Kong. Looking at individual markets, arrivals from China were up by 28.9% over the Jan-Jul period, at 12,499,036, with arrivals from North Asia up by 24.1%, at 1,241,736. Arrivals from South and South East Asia were also strong, up 27.4% y-o-y, at 1,948,855.

BMI already made upwards revisions to our forecasts for 2010 tourist arrivals and tourist expenditure in Q310, so we see no need to make any further changes to our forecasts in Q410. That said, we would caution that there could be an additional upside risk to our 2010 forecasts, given the continued robust nature of arrivals data.

Sino-Japanese tensions to impact on tourism?

Rising tensions between China and Japan - following a collision between a Chinese fishing boat and two Japanese coastguard vessels off the disputed Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands - could have a disruptive impact on tourist flows over the remainder of 2010. In the wake of Japan's decision to detain the trawler captain following the collision in early September 2010, China postponed the planned visit of some 1,000 Japanese schoolchildren to the World Expo in Shanghai. There have also been reports of Chinese citizens and businessmen cancelling planned trips to Japan in the wake of the incident.

Further, China's National Tourism Administration said later in the month that Chinese tourists were showing less willingness to visit Japan, as a result of the trawler captain's continued detention, according to a report on Xinhua. Bilateral tourism flows between China and Japan have been increasing sharply in recent years, with some 1.19mn Chinese tourists having visited Japan over the Jan-Jul 2010 period, up 38% y-o-y. For its part, Japan sent some 746,313 tourists to China, an increase of 16.2% y-o-y.

With the trawler captain due to be released from detention by the Japanese on September 29, having been arrested on charges of illegally fishing in Japanese waters and deliberately causing a collision, it is to be hoped that both sides can move on swiftly from this incident before lasting damage is done to social and cultural ties.
