Oct. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- In Russia’s capital, deaths doubled through the toxic fumes caused from ongoing wildfires and record high temperatures.

Both the tourists and locals were seen wearing protective face masks as a toxic fog of poisonous smoke blanketed Moscow.

The number of deaths in the city escalated to twice as high as normal, said Moscow’s chief health official. As Moscow sweltered under a killer-smog, Andrei Seltsovky revealed that the local morgues were close to capacity.

To spend just two hours on Moscow’s smog-choked streets was the same as smoking two packs of cigarettes, Russia’s chief doctor said.

Residents escaped the city in droves as the acrid smog seeped into apartments, offices and the metro. Even pets were being given surgical face masks for protection against the smog.

Because of the low visibility, around ninety flights a day were delayed or diverted by the smog on the runway at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport.

Usually it is industry that creates this kind of smog, as is seen the Chinese city of Linfen, situated on the banks of the Fen River. The Blacksmith Institute considers this is the most polluted town on the planet. It is home to a huge coal industry, steel plants and refineries, as it provides just under two thirds of China’s energy.

The air is black in the town as its residents literally choke on the coal dust. The level of sulfur dioxide and other toxin surpass all acceptable limits. Clean drinking water is hard to find, due to the water sources being contaminated by arsenic.

The home of the world’s largest smelting complex is Norilsk, Russia’s second largest city above the Arctic City. The town of smog and acid rain is the nation’s biggest polluter, annually releasing 500 tonnes each of nickel oxides and copper, plus two million tons of sulfur dioxide.

Norilsk Nickel is Russia’s main producer of nickel, cobalt, platinum and palladium, as well as controlling one-third of the world’s nickel deposits.

One of the world’s densest populated cities, Mexico City, Mexico, is also known as one of the most smog endangered cities in the world.

Some experts state that globally there are more deaths annually associated to air pollution than to automobile accidents.
