This essay emphasizes three key attributes to working intelligently: focus, creativity, and purpose.

Focus is the first topic covered, and concrete tips are given to help the reader focus more effectively in a work setting.

Creativity is explored at length.  Zorach draws into question the assumption that successful individuals are "smart" or innately talented, and points out that they often succeed as a direct result of their approach to work.  He criticizes the labelling of successful people as "smart" and instead advocates a more empowering way of looking at things, which emphasizes learning from their successes.  Numerous concrete suggestions are given, describing how to boost creativity with an eye towards increased productively.

Lastly, Zorach explores the question of purpose in work and educational settings.  The connection between purpose and creativity is explored at length, and again, simple ideas are given that can help people to embrace a more purposeful approach to their school or work.  The connections to sustainability and culture in the United States are also discussed.
